Late Saxon strap fitting
Описание
English: Unidentified cast object, probably a strap fitting. Rectangular aperture with oval sectioned bar at ?base to which any strap must have been attached, parallel sides straight internally each with three openwork semicircles and three external scallops creating arches, top edge bevelled internally on both faces. Engraved chevrons mark the join between arches. Upper half formed from triangular plate consisting of a plain border around centrally grooved three-pointed interlace; this form of knot is also known as a triquetra. On each of the four corners is a rounded collared knop, the point of the triangle broken where a fifth knop, or possibly a suspension loop is now missing. The decoration is double sided. Measuring (excluding knops) (at least) 46 x 37mm, 2.5mm thick, (including knops) (at least) 50 x 45mm, 6mm thick. Central aperture 18 x 17mm. If the object were suspended from a now missing loop it may represent the gable end of a house, the bevelled upper inside edge being the lintel above a door. However, the only means of attachment now visible is the bar which presumably held a strap, suggesting the point went sideways or down. This may be an elaborate buckle frame, but the double sided decoration suggests it was meant to be seen from both sides, which a buckle would not be. Barry Ager (British Museum) suggests it may be a piece of 9th century ecclesiastical Anglo-Saxon metalwork.
